Press release: Community share offer for popular Pembrokeshire wholefoods shop - over £100,000 invested in just three weeks!

5 August 2024

The community share offer for Wholefoods of Newport in Newport, Pembrokeshire has got off to a spectacular start. Over £100,000 towards the £375,000 target has already been raised, and more than 70 individuals and several companies are now shareholders. It is also great news that, although it is possible to become a shareholder with an investment of £100, the average investment currently exceeds the target of £1,000 per person.

“We are delighted with the wonderful progress made so far. We never expected to raise over 25% of our target in just three weeks,” says Anna Brown, a Director of Project Wholefoods, the community benefit society leading the project. “This is a testament to how much Wholefoods of Newport is loved by the local community and visitors alike, and the huge gap it would leave in Newport’s very special high street if it closed down.”

“My mother and I have put our heart and soul into making Wholefoods of Newport what it is over the last 11 years, but retirement plans mean that we need to sell it or shut it down in the autumn,” says co-owner Clare Thomas. “So it’s fantastic news that so many people have already invested to safeguard its future as a wholefoods shop through a community purchase. All current staff will keep their jobs if the share offer is successful, and we are excited by the plans that the Project Wholefoods team have for making it an even better place to shop.”

“Wholefoods of Newport is the centrepiece of the independent shops that make Newport so special,” says shareholder Rachel from Moylgrove, Pembrokeshire. “It provides an outlet for our local growers and bakers as well as stocking basics and more exotic store cupboard ingredients. I invested because I'd like to protect the diverse offering that comes from having shops of all types in our small towns."

But you don’t have to live locally – or even in the UK - to become a shareholder!

“Although supermarkets and shopping malls have their place, I am a fervent believer that we need to support local businesses, customs and trade whenever and wherever possible, no matter what part of the world we live in,” says Shona from Brisbane, Australia. “This is particularly so in a town like Newport where there is such delight to be gained from wandering down the high street, noodling in and out of the different establishments, and appreciating all that they contribute to the community.

When a chance came up to be part of the community purchase of Wholefoods of Newport, I couldn’t resist. Not only will my small contribution help prevent its closure, but I now get the warm glow of knowing I own a teeny, tiny bit of Wales. Now, to work on my Welsh! Rwy’n gobeithio ymweld yn bersonol yn faun.”

Hugh Simpson-Wells, one of the Directors of Project Wholefoods, says “After a lot of hard work by our team of volunteers over the last six months, we are delighted that our community share offer for Wholefoods of Newport will go live at the launch on Thursday 11 July. It is very clear that there is a great deal of enthusiasm for safeguarding the shop’s future under community ownership, and we are very encouraged that so many residents and visitors have already indicated interest in investing.”

It's all systems go...

23 May 2024

Please see below for a quick update on what’s happening and next steps.

Very positive response to our survey
We have had a great response to our online survey. Over 90% of more than 200 respondents are supportive of the project, and the vast majority said they would be interested in the forthcoming community share offer. We have also had some great feedback and suggestions to feed into our planning.

Legal status as Community Benefit Society
Project Wholefoods Limited is now incorporated as a Community Benefit Society, and this has enabled us to open a bank account.

Business plan
The Project Wholefoods team is working on a detailed business plan, drawing on generous help from others with relevant experience and expertise. We are also in regular contact with the current owners of the business and discussions are progressing well.

If the community purchase is successful, Wholefoods of Newport will continue to trade as a wholefoods shop, with a strong emphasis on organic, local and ethical produce. We also believe that there is a significant opportunity to make the shop even better, by enhancing the product range and reconfiguring the available space.

Funding applications and community share offer
We are also very busy preparing a formal application for part-funding via the Community Ownership Fund (COF). The deadline is 26 June 2024.

Our focus will then shift to raising the required matched funding from the public – residents, visitors, anyone who has a stake in Newport and its future – via a community share offer.

Media coverage
We have been in the news again! Visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/projectwholefoods to see links to recent articles.

Any questions?
Please don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any questions – either by emailing hello@projectwholefoods.cymru or in person (weather permitting!) at Newport market on Mondays.

Press release: Momentum building to secure the future of Wholefoods of Newport as a community-owned shop

2 May 2024

Following the very successful public meeting in Newport, Pembrokeshire which was held to discuss bringing the much-loved local wholefoods shop into community ownership, a team of local residents is taking the project forward.

Over 180 people have already completed the online survey at https://bit.ly/WholefoodsSurvey which the Project Wholefoods team launched to test demand further. More than 85% of respondents say that securing the future of the wholefoods shop is “very important” to Newport, and 90% are supportive of a community purchase.

The business plan and funding applications are currently being finalised, and the launch of a community share offer is planned for June.

Project Wholefoods now has a website at www.projectwholefoods.cymru and a Facebook page at www.facebook.com/projectwholefoods.

The Project Wholefoods team is working closely with the group behind the successful community purchase of Havards in Newport which became the first community-owned hardware shop in the UK in 2022.

Hugh Simpson-Wells, one of the Directors of Project Wholefoods, says “We have been delighted by the response to the project, and the results of the survey confirm that there is a big appetite for a community purchase of Wholefoods of Newport. We are now in the process of setting up a Community Benefit Society, and finalising the business plan, funding applications and a community share offer. So watch this space!”

Cris Tomos of PLANED, the charity supporting community share offers in West Wales, says “Following the successful community purchase of Havards in 2022, it is fantastic to see so much momentum building to secure the future of Wholefoods of Newport as a community-owned shop." Cris added "Responses to the survey are very encouraging, and I am working closely with the Project Wholefoods team to progress funding applications and the community share offer.”
